If you are a reseller of goods and services over the internet, then you are probably aware of just how important active demographic targeting (ADT) is when it comes to ensuring your product is seen by the right people.
Today, digital marketing firms employ all types of data collection and analytical surveys to decipher buying trends and the effectiveness of specific advertising concepts. It is a proven fact that if you can figure out whom your target audience is…then you can figure how to effectively communicate with them.
The secret today for effective digital/internet marketing is primarily two-fold. If you are able to integrate these two concepts into your digital marketing plan then both your sales and customer satisfaction ratings will increase. Just what are these two integral concepts?
- It is imperative that you are able to correctly match your products with the customer demographic that it will appeal to. If your buyers can be located then you have one half the battle.
- Your advertising must be creative enough to capture your customers attention but different enough from other internet ads to standout. The new normal is that all advertising is similarly sexy and cool so your advertising may not have to be… to be effective.

This week we spoke to Mr. Jamie Burris, CEO & President of a digital marketing company located in Florida. His firm caters to startups and under-developed companies that are looking to expand their sales performance. Mr. Burris works by the motto that “…data is king.” It is his belief that until you have captured enough data to develop a strategic plan to drive your sales long-term…you are just guessing on your ad spends.
An example of the power of such information can be found with one of his clients. This company manufacturers what may be the most innovative and unique self-defense product to be introduced to that market in 30 years. His market research discovered that a demographic that could be easily accessed through digital marketing was 42+ year old fathers who were somewhat “techie,” competent.
Once that demographic was identified, the creative team went to work to develop effective advertising to market this new product to those fathers of college age daughters. Where most advertising firms were initially using college age, highly attractive women in the ads, Burris demurred and had the content changed to reflect less attractive but more “sweet,” and vulnerable looking models. His reasoning was that fathers don’t think of their daughters as “hot,” or “sexy.” Integrating such models into the ads would make it harder for the target demographic to relate to the advertisements concept. If they don’t relate…..they don’t click!

As represented in the example above, for an ad to be strategic and effective it must be highly tuned into a relatable format for the targeted demographic. Remember, the secret to digital marketing effectiveness is first, know your targeted buyer and second….make the ad relatable to them! Anything less is a waste of money.
You can pay to have creative, sexy, works of art developed to use as your digital advertisement but if you miss the targeted demographic by a couple of years it will not be effective. IF, the demographic is correctly identified but the ad gets lost in all of the other “white noise,” posted on the internet, then you got close to your sales target…..but again, “no cigar!”
Remember, when it comes to digital advertising and marketing…..close, only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades!
